There are a number of mosquito control options available to help protect your yard. Our team feels the most effective and safest approach to mosquito control is a professional service.
We have outlined a number of DIY systems below or tools / systems that can be used to help quell or limit the mosquitoes around your yard.
The primary reason a professional mosquito control service is recommended above all other is that an effective treatment is put in place and no additional chemicals are introduced into the area surrounding your home. This ensures that your family, you, pets and more can enjoy the backyard without additional exposure to chemicals.
Mosquito Traps (chemical free / Organic Compound 1-Octanol)
Mosquito traps are heavily marketed and sold on websites like Amazon.com. We have personally purchased a number of these traps over the years to provide some relief from mosquitoes in a natural way. There are two core types of mosquito traps: one that uses lights and either a zapper or fan to SUCK mosquitoes into a containers. The other model is the same but adds another layer by adding 1-Octanol; this is a mosquito attractant that lures mosquitoes in and traps or zaps them.
PROS: Usually inexpensive
CONS: Not effective, especially for larger areas, 1-Octanol plugins need to be replaced very often.
Mosquito Propane Traps
Propane traps are typically very effective and help trap mosquitoes throughout the season. The propane helps release O2; which mimics the breath of humans – a perfect mosquito attractant. Once mosquitoes get near, they are sucked into a basket and ultimately die from dehydration.
PROS: Effective for larger backyards and help keep the population down.
CONS: Does not create a repellant barrier, expensive to purchase the units and the cost for propane. Reviews online also are mixed – issues with units breaking easily or not providing the expected result.
Mosquito Spraying Systems
Installed spraying systems is an extremely effective mosquito control system; which uses chemicals and consistency to create a mosquito control barrier. The systems are typically expensive and require a complex installation – then plugged into computer which uses a mosquito control chemical – connected to either a water source or pre-mixed solution. The computer triggers automated spraying to ensure that mosquitoes are killed and a barrier is created to block future mosquitoes.
PROS: Very effective at providing consistent mosquito control, can run on an automated schedule or triggered as needed.
CONS: Expensive system to install and must be maintained with proper and regular maintenance. Pushes excessive chemicals into yard, above what is necessary for proper mosquito control.
Coils, Citronella Candles, etc.
We typically refer to these as the campground control solutions, because they are usually found in the camping section of stores. Coils, Candles, misters that leverage citronella are a great way to protect a very small area; however – they burn out or don’t cover the edges – so again, a very small area of coverage.
PROS: Cheap and effective in a small area.
CONS: Only effective in a very small area – these are not effective for patios, unless you are burning LOTS of them.
Bracelets, Worn Devices, etc.
We see them at grocery stores, websites, social media and more – kids happily playing in the yard and wearing a simple little bracelet.
PROS: We really cannot find any.
CONS: These are cheap wearables, marketed to provide a solution they simply cannot deliver on.
Home Treatment (sprays)
Chemical Treatments (pyrethrins) There are a number of chemical based DIY treatments that you can purchase online and they are typically the same chemicals used by professionals to build a mosquito control barrier. Some states require a license and in some locations, certain chemical treatments are banned. It is critical to not assume that this type of DIY treatment is easy – a simple mistake can cause significant destruction to your yard, pollinators, etc.
PROS: Extremely effective to build a mosquito control barrier and kill mosquitoes.
CONS: Chemicals can be very dangerous. In some cases, using chemicals too close to a pond can kill fish and aquatic plants. Banned or license requirements make it difficult to acquire.
All-Natural Treatments There are a number of all-natural treatments and most use ingredients that are readily available. Typically they include essential oils or a mix or garlic concentrate, but they fairly easy to make. When sprayed on bushes and foliage around your yard, they can also be fairly effective at keeping mosquitoes away.
PROS: Easy and Cheap to make and DIY.
CONS: Effectiveness varies, it is hard to get enough created and spread across your hard to be truly effective. All-natural mosquito control also breaks down faster – so treatments are needed frequently.
The peak mosquito control season is March 15th to October 15th; however, we recommend starting control services in early March. The early start helps ensure that the eggs that survived the freezing weather are less likely to spawn and any that make it through are killed by the treatment.
